People need structure in their lives to create a routine that supports physical and emotional health. The absence of a schedule and structure often leads to stress, overthinking, low energy, low motivation, and reduced overall quality of life. However, sometimes structure and a repetitive schedule can also lead to such an automatic life that people lose life satisfaction, feel burned out, and ask themselves, “And this is it? This is how my life will look for the next 10, 20, or 30 years?” Therefore, in the midst of routine and everyday life, we can use certain techniques that can help us gain a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
Finding something that provides motivation and a sense of achievement. It can be a career that you are genuinely passionate about or a hobby that gives you the energy to keep going. Very often, people feel stuck at their job. Therefore, looking for a career in which you are truly interested can provide a better understanding of yourself and something to look forward to when you wake up.
Gratitude. Even though we all hear each time that we should be grateful and that it is not something new, practicing gratitude helps to refocus on positive things in your life. For example, when falling asleep, if you notice that your mind is wandering and focusing on traumas, the past, or things you lack, gently switch your attention to things you are grateful for in your life—there are so many of them!
When socializing with people, listen to what they say instead of rushing to tell your story. Listening to other people brings a sense of unity and connection with others and, therefore, keeps you in the present moment (instead of the past or future). Have you noticed that when we socialize with other people, we often realize that they go through similar experiences, and we are so much alike that we are, therefore, not alone in our journey?
Stop making negative comments about the way you look, feel, or behave. Decrease judgment and be thankful to yourself. Stand up in front of the mirror and tell yourself how wonderful you are, or give your baby self a mental hug in your head. Moreover, stop criticizing the way your body looks. Instead, focus on what it is capable of doing. Even if you feel that you need to, for example, lose weight, give yourself time and be gentle with yourself.
Fill up your day with pleasant things. For instance, pour some aromatic tea when you work or prepare for exams, take a new road on your way home, or meet with friends after work. Do something that helps dilute the stress and routine in your everyday life.
Creating a satisfying life rarely happens automatically. You need to create a life that fits your pace, goals, and personality. Increasing emotional satisfaction takes action and the desire to change. Therefore, stop comparing yourself to others. Instead, compare your new self to your past self. Identify things that bring you pleasure and joy and make your life more satisfying.
